About

Bhaktimarga Swami, known worldwide as The Walking Monk, is a Canadian sannyasi (renounced monk) in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, based at the Toronto temple. Born John Vis in Chatham, Ontario in 1952, he has walked across Canada four times in the spirit of pilgrimage — journeys documented in the National Film Board's The Longest Road — and has also trekked across the USA, Israel, Ireland, Guyana, Trinidad, Mauritius and Fiji, sharing kirtan and Krishna consciousness in towns and villages along the way. A playwright, director and author of The Saffron Path, he leads chanting wherever his walks take him, from temple kirtans to festival stages, embodying a "car-free, care-free" life of devotion in motion.
