Common Kirtan Chord Progressions

Kirtan harmony is simple by design — the repetition is the point. These generic progressions underpin countless chants and are a starting place for harmonium or guitar. They aren't tied to any artist's arrangement; transpose freely to suit your voice.

Ready for real songs? Learn to Play Kirtan collects every mantra with a verified chord chart, complete with guitar and harmonium views.

The Two-Chord Sway

Em – D (or Am – G)

The most common Kirtan foundation: two chords a whole step apart, rocked back and forth. Sit on each chord for a full phrase of the mantra. Works for nearly any chant.

The Minor Journey

Am – G – F – G

A gentle four-bar loop that rises and settles. Start slow and meditative; as the energy builds, keep the loop but double the strumming pace.

The Major Lift

G – C – D – C (or D – G – A – G)

A bright, uplifting loop suited to joyful call-and-response sections. The IV and V chords create momentum that carries the response line home.

The Drone

One chord (e.g. E or Em) held throughout

Traditional Kirtan often stays on a single tonal center, like a harmonium or tanpura drone. Melody and rhythm carry all the movement — ideal for deep, meditative chanting.

The Descending Line

Am – G – F – E

A stepwise descent that resolves with gentle tension on the E. Common in slower, devotional pieces; take the final chord softly before the loop begins again.

Tip: begin slowly, repeat the loop many times, and let tempo and volume rise and fall with the group — the arc of a chant matters more than the chords.
