Sa Ta Na Ma (Kirtan Kriya)

Saa Taa Naa Maa

"Infinity, life, death, rebirth — the complete cycle of creation"

Word by Word

Sa
infinity, cosmos, the totality of all that is
Ta
life, birth, existence taking form
Na
death, change, transformation
Ma
rebirth, regeneration, resurrection

Full Translation

Sa — infinity, the totality of the cosmos. Ta — life, existence taking form. Na — death, transformation, the letting-go. Ma — rebirth, regeneration, the return. Together the four sounds trace the full cycle of creation. They are the panj shabd — the five primal sounds — because the vowel "a" running through all four syllables is counted as the fifth, unifying sound.

Pronunciation Tips

sah tah nah mah — each syllable even and unhurried, the "ah" resonant and open; traditionally chanted aloud, then whispered, then silently, with the fingertip sequence throughout
