Gate Gate Paragate Parasamgate Bodhi Svaha

"Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone utterly beyond — awakening, hail!"

Word by Word

Gate — gone | Gate — gone | Paragate — gone beyond | Parasamgate — gone utterly / completely beyond | Bodhi — awakening, enlightenment | Svaha — hail! / so be it

Full Translation

The closing mantra of the Heart Sutra, the most famous of the Prajnaparamita ("Perfection of Wisdom") teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. Rather than naming a deity, it expresses the journey of consciousness moving beyond all fixed views into the open, liberated awareness of enlightenment. It is chanted as the distilled essence of the wisdom that "sees through" the illusion of a separate, solid self.
