Definition
The "First Book" — the Sikh scripture compiled by Guru Arjan in 1604 from the hymns of the Gurus and of Hindu and Muslim saints, organized by raga so it would be sung rather than merely read. Expanded with Guru Tegh Bahadur's verses and enthroned by Guru Gobind Singh as the eternal Guru, it is honored today as the Guru Granth Sahib — a scripture that is also a songbook, at the heart of every gurdwara.
