Definition
The "ancient stories" — a vast library of Sanskrit texts that carry Hindu philosophy through narrative: creation tales, genealogies of gods and sages, and above all the life stories of the deities invoked in kirtan. Where the Vedas give revelation and the Upanishads give philosophy, the Puranas give the stories — the faces and adventures behind the divine names that chanters sing.
