Definition
The great epic of Rama — Valmiki's ancient poem telling how Prince Rama, his devoted wife Sita, and the monkey-hero Hanuman triumph over the demon king Ravana. It is the story behind many of kirtan's most beloved names: every "Sita Ram" chant and every recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa sings this tale of loyalty, courage, and love. Tulsidas's Hindi retelling, the Ramcharitmanas, carried the story into the heart of North Indian devotional singing.
