Hanuman Chalisa

Full Translation

The Hanuman Chalisa ("forty verses to Hanuman") is a devotional hymn praising Hanuman — the monkey-god whose boundless strength is matched only by his selfless devotion to Rama. Its verses recount his wisdom, courage, humility, and power to remove fear and obstacles. It is among the most recited devotional texts in the world.

Spiritual Significance

Reciting the Chalisa is traditionally believed to grant courage, protection, and the dissolving of fear and adversity. For practitioners it models the ideal of bhakti: total, joyful surrender in service of the divine.

Cultural Context & History

Composed in the 16th century by the poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas in the Awadhi language. It was carried into the global yoga and Kirtan world largely through Krishna Das, for whom the Chalisa is a signature, sung in long, meditative call-and-response settings.
