Definition

A spiritual lineage or tradition through which teachings, mantras, and initiation are handed down from guru to disciple in an unbroken succession. Belonging to a recognized sampradaya authenticates a teacher's authority and preserves the purity of practice across generations. The major Vaishnava sampradayas each trace their line back to a founding acharya — Madhvacharya's Brahma Sampradaya and Vallabhacharya's Pushtimarg among them.
