Life & Legacy
Known to his devotees simply as Maharaj-ji, Neem Karoli Baba was a Hanuman-devoted saint of northern India whose ashrams at Kainchi and Vrindavan drew a remarkable circle of Western seekers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Though he himself left no formal organization or teaching system, his influence on Western devotion is incalculable.
It was through him that Ram Dass — whose book Be Here Now introduced a generation to Eastern spirituality — Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, and Bhagavan Das found their path. Many of them returned to America carrying the practice of Kirtan, and the call-and-response chanting that fills Western yoga studios and concert halls today flows in large part from the love awakened in his presence.
Contribution to Kirtan
Though revered as a guru rather than a performer, he was the spark behind the entire Western kirtan movement: the young Americans who gathered at his feet — among them Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, and Bhagavan Das — returned home to become its founding voices. His emphasis on Ram Nam and the constant remembrance of the divine name shaped the chant-centered devotion they carried west.
