This beloved Devi chant calls to the Divine Mother by her most tender and most cosmic names at once: Amba, simply "Mother"; Jagadamba, "Mother of the whole universe"; and Bhavani, the giver of life and existence. Singing "jaya" — victory, hail — to her is both celebration and surrender, greeting the power that births, protects, and transforms all things.
Spiritual Significance
Amba and Jagadamba are ancient names of the great Goddess honored across India, especially in her forms as Durga and Parvati. Lines of this chant echo the famous "Jai Ambe Gauri" aarti sung nightly in temples and homes during Navaratri, the nine-night festival of the Mother. In Western kirtan it has become one of the essential Devi chants, its rolling melody building from lullaby softness to full-throated praise.
Cultural Context & History
Dave Stringer's "Jay Ambe," from his landmark album Japa (recently reissued in a 2024 remaster), features the voices of Suzanne Sterling, Donna De Lory, and C.C. White. Stringer — who found kirtan while working at an ashram in India as a film editor — helped define the sound of American kirtan, and this track's ecstatic gospel-tinged crescendo shows why.
