The guitar needs no introduction — which is precisely its value in kirtan. As chanting traveled West in the twentieth century, the instrument half the room already owned became a natural vehicle for it: six strings, a warm middle register that sits comfortably under voices, and complete portability. Where the harmonium sustains, the guitar pulses — each strum is both harmony and heartbeat, so a single guitarist can hold a chant's chords and its rhythm at once. Kirtan asks far less of the instrument than Western songcraft does: most chants rest on two or three open shapes repeated for many minutes, with the player's attention going to steadiness and dynamics rather than changes. With a capo to reach singers' keys from familiar shapes, a beginner's handful of chords covers a remarkable share of the repertoire.
